    How this calculator works

You get two kinds of results.

    1. Healthy weight range. The weights that give a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height. This is the range the World Health Organization uses for healthy adults.

    2. Classic ideal body weight formulas. Each one starts from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that:

    Formula Men Women
    Robinson (1983) 52 kg + 1.9 kg/inch 49 kg + 1.7 kg/inch
    Miller (1983) 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/inch 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/inch
    Devine (1974) 50 kg + 2.3 kg/inch 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch
    Hamwi (1964) 48 kg + 2.7 kg/inch 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg/inch

    How to read your result

Think of the formulas as reference points inside your healthy range rather than one magic number. If all four cluster around a similar weight, that’s a reasonable target for someone with average muscle mass.

Your body type matters. People with a larger frame or more muscle often feel and perform best toward the top of the range. Smaller-framed people often sit lower.

Setting a goal you can keep

    1. Pick a range, not a number. A 3–4 kg band is easier to maintain than a single target.
    2. Look at body fat, not just weight. Check yours with the body fat calculator.
    3. Plan the time it takes. The transformation timeline turns your goal into a realistic date.
    4. Focus on habits. Daily steps, protein, sleep and strength training shape your weight more than any formula.

    Limitations

Ideal weight formulas don’t account for muscle, bone structure, age or ethnicity. They’re a starting point for adults, not medical advice. If you’re unsure what’s healthy for you, ask your doctor or one of our coaches.

    05questions

01Which ideal weight formula is the best?

None is perfect. They were created for specific purposes, such as medication dosing. The healthy BMI range is usually the most practical guide, and the formulas give a useful middle point.

02Why are the four formulas different?

They were built from different data sets in different decades. Robinson and Miller were published in 1983 as refinements of Devine (1974). Hamwi dates to 1964.

03Does ideal weight depend on muscle?

Yes. These formulas only use height and sex. A muscular person can be healthy above the range. Use the body fat calculator for a better picture.

04Is my ideal weight the same as my goal weight?

Not necessarily. A good goal weight is one you can maintain while feeling strong and healthy. For many people, losing 5–10% of current weight brings real health benefits.

05Does this work for very short or very tall people?

The formulas were designed for adults roughly 5 to 7 feet tall. Outside that range, rely on the healthy BMI range instead.
